Idiom: Better half
OK, men, let’s talk about your better half.
This little idiom is used to refer to a married man’s spouse, namely his wife.
It is a little humorous, and many people will use it that way.
This means that in a relationship, the woman is the more intelligent, better-looking, and general leader.
For example, a man could say, ‘I’d love to go to the baseball game, but I have to ask my better half first,’ or ‘My company told me to transfer to New York, but I need to discuss it with my better half first.’
I suppose if I try to explain it a little more when two people get married, they become one person.
Generally, they share a last name, a home, a family, expenses, good times and bad times.
Now, of course, the meaning of the term needs to be modified to apply to same-sex marriages as well.
In these cases, either partner can be referred to as the other member’s better half.
If I write tongue-in-cheek and reference my marriage, at least my wife is prettier, smarter, and smells better than I do.
She is the better half of our partnership.
