Word of the Day: Alluring

It’s Thursday, summer’s over, and it’s not Halloween yet, but I have a word that may be a nightmare for many Japanese – alluring.

The word doesn’t mean nightmare; it means something or someone is attractive or exciting.

However, look at all those Ls and Rs in there.

I can feel my Japanese students shudder from here.

Men often think of women as alluring.

Since I’m a happily married man who wants to remain so, I didn’t use a picture of an alluring woman to accompany this post.

My wife is also camera-shy and flatly said no when I asked if I could use her image.

So, that leaves me with one of my other passions – cars.

I enjoy cars and find them alluring whenever I see a unique one or a classic.

I am attracted to a nice car like a bee is to honey.

Of course, I can’t buy every car I see, nor can I drive them all, but I can do a test drive at the dealership for some models.

That’s where the main problem comes in.

For some reason, most of the cars which are alluring or exciting in some way are also highly impractical.

Sports cars are super cool and can move down the road, but how quickly do I need to get to the grocery store?

Four-wheel drive vehicles are also very cool because they can go almost anywhere, but we have bridges now, which means fording across a waist-deep river is not a high priority on my list.

There you have it; that’s why women control the purse strings – at least in my household, anyway.
